One Year of Train SMART: Putting Gun Safety Into Practice

One year ago, Train SMART launched as an ambitious new project to bring the military’s proven principles of training, safety, and accountability to the world of civilian firearms training. Our mission was deceptively simple: foster a community of safe, highly disciplined gun owners dedicated to those same principles — training, safety, and accountability — and empower them to serve as respected role models in their communities and champions of responsible gun ownership.

Military veterans helped create our curriculum to ensure it’s informative, engaging, and backed by data and real-world experience. We also recruited expert instructors with decades of military, hunting, and gun-owning experience to teach our live and on-demand courses to prospective and current gun owners. Our instructors hold themselves to incredibly high standards because they know how important gun safety is, and they’re committed to creating welcoming learning environments for every student — free of politics, salesmanship, and fearmongering.

A Look Back at Our Progress

Since we launched last September, over 700 students from 45 different states have enrolled in our online courses and helped spread the word about safe, responsible gun ownership through materials like our safe buying guide and suicide prevention brochure.

If you haven’t taken one of our online courses yet, click here to enroll today. We’re excited for you to join our community, and we welcome any and all feedback to help us grow in the right direction.

Over the past year, we’ve also been invited to several podcasts and attended conferences to meet more responsible gun owners and share Train SMART’s mission. And we’ve launched profiles on Instagram and Facebook to help everyone — not just our students — stay up to date with Train SMART and learn valuable, bite-sized information about safe, responsible gun ownership that is both easy to remember and easy to share with others. Follow us if you haven’t already!

The Road Ahead

We’re working with several partners to grow the Train SMART community, and we will soon be launching a 2-hour Gun Safety for Hunters course — in both live and on-demand formats — that serves as a refresher or add-on to hunter education courses, but with a focus on gun safety before, during, and after your next hunt.

We’ve also been piloting in-person courses for students who want to be able to practice their marksmanship at the range and get the most from hands-on training. We’ll have more information to share soon when we open enrollments to the public in select states, so stay tuned!

Finally, we just want to thank everyone who has taken part in Train SMART over this past year, including our students, instructors, Leadership Council members, and partners. We’re so grateful for your help in getting us this far. We couldn’t do this without you — and we’re just getting started!
