Train SMART Launches New Gun Safety for Hunters Course

Train SMART has officially launched a new 1.5-hour Gun Safety for Hunters course to help new and experienced hunters build and refine vital gun safety skills before hunting season opens. Available in both live and on-demand formats, this online course is the perfect complement to hunter education courses, as it focuses exclusively on gun safety protocols before, during, and after every hunting trip.

Like every other Train SMART course, Gun Safety for Hunters is backed by data and taught by experts — in this case, hunters with decades of experience who are deeply committed to gun safety and driven to help reduce the number of hunting-related gun deaths and injuries. A 2024 study revealed a stark reality: More people in rural counties were killed by gunfire in the first week of deer hunting season than in any other week of the calendar year. Furthermore, shootings increased by an alarming 49 percent during the first week of deer hunting season compared to the week prior.

Gun Safety for Hunters covers a wide range of topics to help hunters safely store, handle, and operate firearms in any environment — at home, traveling to and from the backwoods, in tree stands, and everywhere in between. And because the course is available online, it’s easy for members of your hunting party to enroll and learn the same core safety fundamentals together, regardless of experience or skill level, ensuring everyone operates with the same high standards well before your next hunt.

Course topics include

  • Universal gun safety rules
  • Ethical hunting practices
  • Secure gun storage and transportation
  • Loading and unloading different guns
  • Ammunition basics and selection
  • Helpful gear
  • Carry and shooting positions
  • Moving safely in groups

  • Tree stand safety

As an added bonus, every Gun Safety for Hunters student receives free access to another course covering state-specific gun laws.

Hunting is a cherished tradition that gives families and friends a chance to come together and bond in the Great Outdoors. By committing to uncompromising safety standards, we can protect fellow hunters and preserve this legacy for generations to come.
